The Subaru Crosstrek was introduced (as the XV Crosstrek) in 2015, taking the outgoing Outback Sport's slot in the lineup. This Impreza hatchback-based compact crossover has been a strong seller for its good looks, standard all-wheel drive, and all-around capability. For the 2021 model year, the Crosstrek has been refreshed with a new front bumper, new grille designs and fog light inserts, a brand-new trim level called the Sport, and power upgrade to a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It will continue to win over drivers with its car-like ride and SUV-like performance, but with a few enticing enhancements.

Trims and Powertrains

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trim levels. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that creates 152 hp and is matched up with a standard six-speed manual transmission (a continuously variable transmission [CVT] is available). This powertrain is restricted to the base and Premium models, while the Sport and Limited get the 182 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder with the CVT. The Base and Premium models with the six-speed manual achieve 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, while those same trims with the CVT return 28 city/33 highway. The Sport and Limited both get 27 city/34 highway. As is customary with Subaru, all-wheel drive is standard across the board.

New Sport Trim

The debuting Sport trim  will be the only Crosstrek to have the dual-function X-MODE with Hill Descent Control and selectable drive settings for snow/dirt and deep snow/mud. Its other distinctions will be unique exterior trim elements, including specific wheel arch moldings, sport-type 17-in. alloy wheels with a dark gray finish, and a gunmetal-finish for the front grille, side mirrors, and badges. The interior has yellow-stitched StarTex upholstery and carpeted floor mats that display the yellow Sport logo. The Sport is singled out further by its gunmetal and simulated carbon-fiber interior accents and LED rear gate light.

The other CVT-equipped 2021 Subaru Crosstrek models get X-MODE with Hill Descent Control for optimal performance in low-friction and off-road conditions. Also standard for the CVT models is SI-DRIVE, a powertrain performance management system that lets drivers modify the vehicle's throttle characteristics by choosing between "Intelligent" and "Sport" modes. The "Intelligent" setting optimizes fuel efficiency, while the "Sport" setting enhances performance. All CVT models (except for the base) also have an eight-speed manual mode controlled via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The base model comes with a driver-selectable Low Shift mode for greater downhill control.

Every 2021 Subaru Crosstrek that has the CVT comes with the Subaru EyeSight suite of active driver aids. The latest addition to this package is advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering capability, while automatic pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure prevention, auto start-stop, and a rear seat reminder make a welcome return.

The base comes with automatic climate control, an infotainment system with voice-command capability and a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, a multi-functional display with fuel economy data, and keyless entry. The Premium adds satellite and HD radio, a six-speaker audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, fog lights, heated front seats, a heated windshield, heated side mirrors, dual USB ports, welcome lighting, a retractable cargo cover, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. An optional equipment package will supply a moonroof, blind-spot monitoring with lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and push-button ignition.

The Limited receives LED headlights, a black or gray leather interior with orange stitching, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. It also gets high-beam assist and reverse automatic braking; a moonroof, navigation unit, and premium Harman Kardon audio system are available in an optional package. Subaru's STARLINK connectied services are offered for the Premium, Sport, and Limited trims. The Safety Plus Package yields a bundle of emergency services, while the Safety Plus & Security Plus Package adds remote start and stolen vehicle recovery. The Concierge Package offers in-vehicle assistance features that let you make hotel and restaurant reservations, purchase tickets, and schedule appointments.
